November the 16th is the International Day for Tolerance, encouraging nations around the world to take all positive measures necessary to promote tolerance in our societies.
UNESCO’s Declaration of Principles on Tolerance defines tolerance as “respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. It is fostered by knowledge, openness, communication, and freedom of thought, conscience and belief. Tolerance is harmony in difference.”
Tolerance is a necessity for peace and for the economic and social advancement of all people.
Education is a vital step towards a tolerant society, education should aim to counteract influences that lead to fear and exclusion of others, and should help young people to develop capacities for independent judgement, critical thinking and ethical reasoning.
