JustAct, an initiative of Justice and International Mission, a unit of the Uniting Church in Australia (Vic/Tas Synod), last year publicised the exploitation that was found in factories that make Christian products. They launched the campaign ‘Just Holy Hardware’ which asked Christian retailers in Australia to search for solutions to prevent the exploitation of workers making the goods they sell.
Over the past year Koorong agreed to discuss ways in which they can ensure the people who make their products are treated with dignity. Koorong have also issued a Fair Trade Policy, covering the conditions under which the goods they stock should be produced, available here: http://orders.koorong.com/info/fairtradepolicy.jsp.
Word Bookstore have also recently agreed to engage in conversation with the Justice and International Mission Unit of the Uniting Church in Australia. Word has also made their purchasing policy publicly available online here: http://www.word.com.au/purchasingpolicy.aspx.
JustAct encourages you to ensure that the Christmas gifts that you buy and the way you celebrate Christmas doesn’t rob others of their hope and joy.
