National Chair, Julian Disney, states:

“Over a million Australians are already in poverty or severe hardship. As the global economy deteriorates many more people will be unable to find enough work.  More will get into debt and more will suffer family breakdown. Poverty needs to be at the head and heart of the social inclusion agenda.”

The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:

• strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia;
• and encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.

The success of Anti-Poverty Week depends on individual people, congregations and organisations taking action. Any activity, large or small, that helps people to express their interest and concern about any aspect of local, national or global poverty is very welcome.
