International Mens Day is part of a positive change around the world.

The theme for the 2010 International Mens Day is “Our Children Our Future”. The theme celebrates the 48 hour parternship with the United Nations “Universal Children’s Day”. The event was held on Friday 19 November.

The main focus of International Mens Day is;

- to promote positive male role models
- to celebrate men’s positive contribution to society
- to focus on men’s health and well-being
- to highlight discrimination against men
- to improve gender relations
- to create a safer better world

The theme of the campaign is: Cancer can be prevented too.

Here is what the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) President Professor David Hill said: “Of the 12 million people who are diagnosed with cancer each year around 20% of cases can be attributed to viral and bacterial infections that either directly cause or increase the risk of cancer.”

You can download a lot of resources including an ecard (available in English, French and Spanish) to pass on to someone you love that highlights one of six lifestyle changes that can help to prevent cancer. 

 The campaign looks at how the risk of developing cancer can significantly be reduced through simple measures:

• Stop tobacco use and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
• Limit alcohol consumption
• Avoid excessive sun exposure
• Maintain a healthy weight, through eating healthily and exercising regularly
• Protect against cancer-causing infections
